A parent who believed their toddler disliked cheese changed course after the child tried goldfish crackers at a park and "proceeded to go nuts for them." The parent had previously avoided making goldfish crackers at home, calling the urge to order a cookie cutter for that purpose "one step too far."
But the parent already had a rationale prepared. A little over a year earlier, they had discovered cheese straws and was struck by their "uncanny flavor resemblance to Cheez-Its and other so-called cheese crackers." That meant the parent already knew how to make a similar snack — it was just a matter of when. The moment arrived on a dreary day, with "two pudgy forearms and a very loud block of orange cheddar."
The parent had previously made Pop-Tarts, Oreos, graham crackers, marshmallows and icebox cake wafers, and acknowledged a tendency to do "crazy things" and call them a good time. Even so, they felt making goldfish crackers was different, though no one stopped them.
